THE ULTRA PLANT IS A DARK WORLD that is wracked by frequent thunderstorms. Lightning spears the desolate canyons and valleys of this world and massive cord-like structures bridge the gaps. Whenever lightning strikes, lights attached to these cords light up too. In the horizon, large Xurkitree can be seen, dwarfing the area you arrive in...[break][break]

Several abandoned power stations can be found throughout the area, but they seem to be deactivated...

THERE IS NO WONDER TO BE HAD HERE. this dark twisted fantasy is not new. nor is it unique. it is just another world to be had. countless blips in the grand scale of the multiverse, he tells himself.

the other worlds he’s visited had been more developed. populated with people or their mutated progeny. but, just by the numbers, there should be worlds like these too. ones where a feeble species, armed only with pokeball and their ingenuity, floundered against impossible odds.

some thresholds prove too high to overcome.

“we can break if you’re tired,” he offers their companions. for someone like Katherine Fairburne, he expects this to be no more than an annoyance. as for the head ranger, his expectations float in the seamless space of unpredictability.

JAMES BAKER is, by all accounts, just a civilian, and the one that sits at the forefront of his concern.

Each step taken threatens their supposed safety, and each sound made declares their unwelcomed presence. Although that alone should raise some concerns, Katherine finds familiarity with such risks comforting. It's where she thrives.

Although, admittedly, FERNANDO SILPH's presence here complicates things. Staying alive is simple, but ensuring that others also survive is where she finds no comfort.

in their case, shelter just so happens to be a depowered power station. he can tell because nothing emanates from it. no light, no sound, and certainly no presence, at least none that he can see from this far away.[break][break]

the zygarde 10% leading the charge stops, barking once to alert the team to do the same. it sniffs the ground only to leap back, avoiding the STAKATAKA that bursts out. it charges straight at the party.

up ahead, the zygarde leading them stops and lets out a warning bark. that's not good, she thinks, barely having time to process the stir of unease in her chest before a stakataka bursts from the ground and lurches past the zygarde on stony legs towards them.

"what the — !" annalise tries to move out of its way, reaching down to call out her ceruledge in one fluid motion. she doesn't know much of anything about ultra beasts, but a lightning-illuminated look at it gives her an idea on how to hinder its pursuit of them. [break][break]

when james and annalise rebuff the offer as well, fernando allows the topic to subside. while their bravado is one to be applauded, they do not share the same comfort of his SYGNA SUIT. its glossy white fabric glistens in contrast to the abundant lightning. a closer look at his sleeves reveal a translucent veil of INIFINITY ENERGY—a filter that helps ward off the second hand effects of this foreign dimension.

the pitch of his zygarde’s bark is familiar enough for him to understand the situation. one hand rises to adjust his SILPH SCOPE, dialed in on the rising STAKATAKA.

“battle routine set!”

his glalie remains by his side. while it can easily CRUNNCH on these amalgamation of floating cubes, it refuses to give up its ranged superiority against an unknown foe. together, their CAREFUL hesitation coerces his SYNC STONE to activate.

“execute!”

a precise volley of ICE SHARDS not only strike the STAKATAKA but also avoid hitting any allies in the crossfire.

james isn't much of a fighter. in fact, his only real battle was against iseult babineaux during one of their training sessions, and even then, it was almost too easy to beat him. still, that does not mean he will not try his best to survive.[break][break]

choosing to rely on FERNANDO SILPH's pokemon, james takes a few steps back, heeding Katherine Fairburne's warning to avoid being trapped by it.[break][break]

tendrils of GRASS KNOT rise from the ground to wrap around the STAKATAKA, holding it in place for the BRICK BREAKS and ICE SHARDS to connect.[break][break]

DISTORTED ENERGY concentrates into a pool of shadows further ahead in the path, where Katherine materializes. Each breath she takes now is shallow and quick. Her finger remains on the trigger in anticipation of another attack or blow.

zygarde helps them make short work of the stakataka, but the tastes of victory turns bitter when the ground rumbles and more come out to chase after them. Katherine Fairburne 's warning about them remains fresh in her mind as she beelines down the path JAMES BAKER pointed out, her ceruledge in tow.

there's light in the corner of her peripheral, almost dismissible in a world choked by lightning storms. but she turns to look, to see the pokemon Katherine Fairburne is ordering an attack on. annalise slows a little to huff out a command to her ceruledge. [break][break]

her pokemon leaps to action, nimbly avoiding the second land's wrath and xurkitree's swinging arms to strike out at its legs with a shadow claw.

further ahead, the ground thins off into a sharp cliff's edge. a bolt of lightning illuminates thick cords bridging the gap. "hey — maybe we can, like, cross those cables and lose these guys? we just need a pokemon to make sure it's not a live wire!"

ice scatters over the upturned battlefield. like flowering CRYSTALBLOOMS, splintered ICE SHARDS start to expand with an unnatural permafrost. the glalie puts up a BRAVE front as the ultra beast start to cluster together. while the rest of the party escapes, one last pulse of its SYNC STONE triggers its SHEER COLD. behind them, the land starts to swarm with unnatural ice, a sudden wave creating a wall that captures anything arrogant enough to try and worm through.

fernando pays his pokemon little mind. his eye hones in on their current obstacle: a dead end. at annalise henderson’s suggestion, he reveals two pokeballs. each one release a ROTOM that manifests into some bastardized resemblance of a zipline. that accounts for two of them.

the sound of broken glass reminds them that the ultra beast are still in hot pursuit. the ground rumbles as more start to surface. like durants, they’re countless. an agitated hive with an uncanny ability to find them.
